When we look at the first section of ISO 9001:2015, we're talking about scope. I'll quickly touch on what the standard says, and then I'll give you some guidance and some ideas on how to go about approaching this part of the standard.
ISO 9001 QMS is an international standard focussed on the requirements for quality an organization needs to demonstrate its ability to consistently provide products and services that meet customer and applicable statutory and regulatory requirements.
A business should aim to enhance customer satisfaction through the effective application of ISO 9001 quality management systems including processes for improvement, assurance of conformity to customer and applicable statutory and regulatory requirements.
That is a massive mouthful, and I think people get a bit lost. At Best Practice, we campaign for high-performing organizations or other business who wish to become high-performing, and to have a process of self-evaluation. Think about what's important- particularly on a day to day with your team and other people in the organization.
It’s important is to understand that this self-evaluation - this improvement system - applies to the team, to the respective department, to this division. Those are the things to consider as you go forward. All the requirements of the international standard are supposed to be generic; they're intended to be applicable to any business, and I've seen this done in organizations with 40,000+ staff, and I've also seen it applied to small businesses with just a single staff member.
Often people say: “That doesn't apply to an organization like ours.” What they don’t understand that an ISO 9001 quality management system or any management system is a system of self-evaluation.
Every organization should have a business plan, you should check in with how you're going with that business plan and that business plan is ultimately going to be what's going to help you grow.
ISO 9001 is an incredible base for writing a very basic business plan. Keeping that in mind, ISO 9001 can be used in the absence of your business plan if you are a small organization.
Section 2 of ISO 9001 to introduces a whole bunch of fundamentals, and the vocabulary that forms a part of ISO 9000.
It’s the standard that sets up if you like the framework or the guideline to follow. Whether you're referring to ISO 14001, or the new ISO 45001, you can go through the series and all those families have a complimentary document which is fundamentals and vocabulary.
Section 3 of ISO 9001:2015 quality management systems talks about terms and definitions. There’s different references to terms and definitions as you go through the standard, to be understood and applied within the context of your organization.
This has been a brief introduction to sections 1, 2, and 3 of ISO 9001:2015. I hope that prompts some ideas about how you can approach those parts of the standard.
