Environmental management systems are about getting a clear picture of your organization's environmental performance, as well as your organization's impact on land, natural resources, water, air, flora and fauna.
Even if you operate in an office - like myself - we're aware that our operations have an impact elsewhere on greenhouse gas emissions; we're consuming coal-fired power, we're also consuming solar power via solar panels on the building but it's important for us to be trying to minimize that coal-fired power consumption and the consumption of energy that is our environmental aspect and the impact is the greenhouse gas emission measured in carbon dioxide.
For example: we get our energy bill and excess carbon dioxide emissions, so we're ultimately trying to reduce that. We're reducing our impact on the environment in this operation that's a significant environmental aspect and you'll see that in the ISO 14001 standard, identifying your aspects and impacts and considering the impacts or aspects that you have on the environment that are significant.
When you're going through the process of documenting, implementing and maintaining your environmental management system it's the same as any other management system.
It's about the cycle of continual improvement, identifying what your issues are, defining critical processes and procedures to manage those the things that you can implement and then looking at the management review processes that are there at the end of the standard and putting yourself constantly through that cycle of continual improvement.
Have a think about your top 10 environmental issues, maybe they're simple ones in the early days of your environmental management system, but over time you'll slowly mature as you get through those cycles of continual improvement.
Take baby steps. If you don't get it right the first time, have another go at it, that's what it's all about. What we're looking for here at Best Practice is constant continual improvement through those cycles and think about getting that clear picture of your organization's environmental performance.
