With the new ISO 45001 OH&S standard being released this year, we have been getting tons of questions from clients asking how can I work more safely.
ISO 45001 is about what you can do to work more safely. To help you out a little bit, here are some things that I ask myself on a day to day.
-Has anyone ever been hurt doing the thing you're about to do?
The task, the job, the exercise. If you're in construction, if you're in a warehouse or if you're in a dangerous environment, has anybody ever been hurt doing what you're about to do?
If the answer is yes, then how can you avoid getting hurt in that same way. That's what risk management's and risk assessments all about.
Now there's a couple of other things: have I got the training? have I got the tickets? have I got the competencies that I need to do the tasks I'm about to do?
Often we see that people are really motivated and keen to just get the job done, let's just get on with it.
I can't stress enough how important it is to get the training that you need to, make sure you're compliant, you have the the tickets, the qualifications and think about has anyone ever been hurt doing what I'm about to do and how can I avoid getting hurt.
Practical things you can do to work more safely: really basic and obvious but if can take a couple more minutes to plan and prepare a job and don't jump straight into it, because yes we all want to get our work done but I want you to stay safe team. So look after yourself, look out for what you're doing and find out how you can work more safely by checking out the benefits of ISO45001.
