One of the most important advantages of ISO 9001 - and I'd argue that it is the most important aspect of ISO 9001 - is the monitoring & performance evaluation of your organization. The reality of your management system(s) is that they should really be first aspect that you focus on.
An advantage of ISO 9001 - and the 8th success factor - is to focus on how to achieve a desired outcome from implementing your ISO 9001 quality management system, as well having an effective quality dashboard that you keep modifying, evolving and improving.
So, the 8th critical success factor of ISO 9001 is your ability to effectively have a good quality, monitoring, measurement and KPI system.
Using Best Practice as an example: we have a huge dashboard where we start to look at tracking the performance and reporting that performance on a weekly basis across our organization.
If you're a senior manager or a senior leader in a business, it's vital to understand that this part of your ISO 9001 quality management system is the feedback loop, informing you of how well your business plan is going.
What does the dashboard look like in this business?
At Best Practice we look at PNLs, balance sheets, expenses, receivables, utilization sales, marketing, all the costs that are part of a PNL, but more importantly we look at the lead indicators. We look at things like touch points from marketing, touch points in a sales process, we look at the success factors with the delivery of our services.
Doing this allows you to keep going through that process to understand the clear picture of your organization's performance and it's one of the core elements of a successful ISO 9001 quality management system.
If you're just getting into ISO 9001, make sure that your monitoring and measurement is a key part the dashboard, measuring how effective your management system is and measuring the clear picture of the organization's performance.
If there's a team of managers above you in the organization and they've asked you to help with a ISO 9001 quality management system, have a think about what the reporting dashboard looks like.
Remember that the intent of ISO 9001 is that it links to the strategic plan, the business plan, of your organization. It links to and it becomes the graphs, reports and diagrams that track your ability to achieve your objectives and targets.
Ask yourself: Are there graphs? Are there reports? Is data being tracked? Are they targets objectives and targets?
Those questions are a critical to the success of your dashboard and an element of the most important success factors and advantages of any management system including an ISO 9001 quality management systems.
