It's a question coming from a number of our clients, as they're starting to think about how detailed they need to get with their ISO 45001 OH&S management system or AS/NZS 4801 OH&S management system.
Ultimately they're asking the question: Why?
Now, aside from everything else like when a customer or a supplier asks you to have it because you're operating in a dangerous environment or machinery, it's really important to have happy and healthy staff, and your occupational health and safety management systems (ISO 45001) should really be focused on that as priority number one.
My answer focuses on a commonly overlooked practice that occurs when organizations try to implement an ISO 45001 OH&S management system.
If you try to think of it like this: When you bring your staff into your organization, you exchange them money for labor. They help you do the things that need to happen on a day to day, and they become a crucial part of your organization and how it operates; a kind of family or team if you like. So, you want to send them home happy and healthy to their families, so they'll come back again tomorrow.
It's about exchanging a safe workplace that's anticipated, understood, planned and controlled, including all its hazards and risks and then it's sending your people home happy and healthy.
Equally if your team enjoys coming back to work because it's safe, fun, exciting and all those sorts of things, then you are creating a healthy and safe work culture. In return you get staff that understand and follow your safety processes automatically without the hassle of you continually pushing them towards your procedures.
