What is ISO 14001 certification?

ISO 14001 certification is a process whereby an independent organization like Best Practice can go into your organization and verify that you're: following the ISO 14001 specification, and two: you are following the management system that you have defined for your organization to manage and improve your environmental risks and your environmental performance.

Why is it important as a customer for your suppliers to have ISO 14001? If you were concerned that your suppliers may have adverse environmental impacts asking one of your suppliers to maintain ISO 14001 is a great way for your suppliers to benchmark their environmental performance and then start to establish programs to improve that environmental performance over time.

As a customer you also have an opportunity to regulate if you like your suppliers and outline to them what you are concerned about and what parts of their environmental performance you would like improved. The ultimate choice by you as a customer is if you are not satisfied with the environmental performance of some of your suppliers you can choose not to purchase those products and services so having an externally verified or certified environmental management system in accordance with ISO 14001 is a great way to help your suppliers improve their environmental performance into the future.
